FINANCES AND BENEFITS

Illness can bring financial hardship. Benefits may be of help - ask your Department of Social Security for help. For general benefit enquiries the number is Freephone 0800 666555.

For Disability Benefit enquiries the number is 0800 882200.

Local Benefit Agency Office

Roebuck House, Roebuck Close, Cosham PO6 2TA. Tel 9230 8000.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (9282 8621) and the Disability Information and Advice Line (9282 4853) are also of great help. Leaflets FB2 "Which Benefit?" and FP28 "Sick or Disabled?" describe the situation fully.

DSS Sick Notes

These are needed after a week off work - (Leaflet N1 244 "Statutory Sick Pay - check your rights", Leaflet N16 Sickness Benefit and N1253 "Ill and Unable to Work"). If a sick note is needed after less than a week off work, a private sick note will be issued for which there is a charge.

NHS Prescriptions are free for:
  • Children under 16.
  • Young people under 19 in full time education.
  • Women aged 60 and over.
  • Men aged 60 and over.
  • War pensioners.
  • People on Income Support or Family Credit.
  • Pregnant women and those with children aged under one.
